Why huarache sandals are trending in the U.S

August 17, 2023

In recent years, huarache sandals have become the go-to summer shoe in the United States thanks to their many benefits and visually appealing look and continue to grow in popularity but before we dive into the reasons, it's only fitting we start with a brief summary of their history and background. The roots of the Mexican huarache sandal date back to the pre-Columbian era, and they can be traced back to rural communities of Yucatan, Michoacan, Guanajuato and Jalisco.

Initially they were worn by farmworkers and indigenous groups and started gaining popularity in the U.S in the 1960s among hippies and surfers as part of their laidback lifestyle. Here's a little fun fact: The name "huarache" comes from the word "kwarachi" meaning sandal from the Tarascan language spoken by the Purepecha people of Jalisco.

Okay, now that we've covered that let's dive into the reasons why huarache sandals are trending in the United States:

  • Comfort: They offer enduring comfort allowing you to wear them for long periods. The comfortable fit helps support the heel and sole. Not only can you wear them all day without feeling any discomfort but they are also crafted of lightweight materials, making them a perfect fit for long strolls or running errands.
  • Durability and Affordability: You can easily buy a pair without affecting your budget. They can resist a lot of tear and wear, so you don't have to worry about replacing them right away. Today's huarache sandals are made of rubber soles, rendering them not only durable but also economically sensible.
  • Perfect summer wear: They look great with summer dresses and casual outfits, making them the ideal go-to footwear in the summer!
  • Versatility: You can wear them with any style from bohemian-inspired looks to even more formal attire and can come in shades of neutral hues to colorful patterns appealing to a diverse demographic that seeks either a chic refined appearance or a playful summer look.

As the demand for the beloved huaraches continues to grow a lot of retailers have started selling them online and in store. As small business owners, we decided to embark on the journey of opening Ethnic Heritage not only to fulfill the demand for huaraches but also to share a piece of our vibrant Mexican culture with people in the U.S from all backgrounds. Every huarache sandal we sell is made in Mexico by artisans we've partnered up with, not only creating job opportunities in low income areas but also preserving the centuries old tradition of huarache making.

Today we have sold thousands of pairs since opening Ethnic Heritage and currently sell different types and colors ranging from neutral hues to more colorful vibrant ones. And from mules to plaform soles. We hope to be able to continue this journey for years to come and provide people in the U.S with the craftsmanship and tradition that every pair of huarache sandal brings. Consider getting yourself a pair of these Mexican beauties and enjoy the benefits they provide!
